FAQ’s

What is Week of Welcome?

Week of Welcome is the week before classes start in the fall (this year August 15th through 20th), when we put the Institute’s best foot forward to welcome back all of our students with fun events, educational opportunities, networking events, and ways to connect with their cohort. The week starts with the move in of our first-year students, includes large signature events each day for the student community and smaller workshops and events tailored to specific areas and population. More students move to campus each day, and we do our best to include all students across a variety of events. The last official event before the start of classes is on Sunday evening, that is New Student Convocation, the official welcome to Georgia Tech.

What is in it for me?

Volunteering for Move-in and Week of Welcome is a great way to connect with students and is why we love being a part of the GT community. Meeting our first-year students and their families and helping them understand that this is a place where the entire community cares about one another is a really great reason to participate. You also get to meet campus colleagues who you might not have met otherwise. Move-in and Week of Welcome have a lot of moving parts, and people are the most important resource to help make this as smooth an experience as possible. Facilitating workshops allows you to share information about your office but also about areas you might be passionate about (Do you love to knit, write haiku, or teach people how to change their oil? Create a workshop!) and give back to our community. There are t-shirts or other swag to be had at some events if you help out. Also, for USG employees, you can log your volunteer hours on the Virgin Pulse App to get points towards extra money on your paycheck. See the links for that on our resource page for more information.

As a student group, can we participate in the Week of Welcome resource fair or other tabling events?

The WoW Resource Fair is only for departments and offices, however the Student Engagement Fair happens in the first weeks of school (August 29 and 30th in 2023), please check out https://studentengagement.gatech.edu/get-involved/fall-engagement-opportunities-0 for links on how to participate. During Week of Welcome, we encourage student groups to create workshops and events to showcase what their organization does, you can even apply for funding from Buzzfunds (see link in resources, application due by July 7th).
